Business ISP Lumison has today revealed some of the shocking statistics from its e-mail filtering system. The provider deals with roughly 16.5m mails per month, of that an astonishing 8.6m identify as SPAM:
As the proportion of internet e-mails classified as spam breaks through the 50% barrier, research by leading business class ISP, Lumison, shows that this has a potentially huge impact on costs and competitiveness. Lumison deals with 16.5 million e-mails per month, including 8.6 million messages identified and blocked as spam.
Of these, 6 million are blocked from servers that are classified as transit points for spam and the remaining 2.6 million are dealt with through Lumisons intelligent filtering software. By blocking this number of e-mails, Lumison estimates that it saves its clients 16 person years per annum time that would have been spent dealing with these messages.
Revealing the figures, Lumison CEO Aydin Kurt-Elli said: The amount of spam that we receive in our in-boxes is growing at about 700 percent per year an unsustainable level, that we in the ISP community must counter.
As everyone is well aware, in parallel with spam growth comes the increased danger of virus attacks. The IT industry is waking up to this threat, witness the enhanced security functionality built into the recent Windows XP upgrade; however we cannot remain complacent. Our research has also shown that each successful virus attack costs a business roughly £500 in downtime and IT costs. Of course the actual amount can be much more, depending on the ferocity of the attack and the level of preparation.
Lumisons daily analysis of virus activity for the 30th August 2004, shows that the Zafi.B and variants on the NetSky and Bagle Worm viruses were by far the most prevalent, along with the Dropper Trojan virus.
