Those living on one of Scotland's Western Isles may be pleased to learn of plans to utilise a digital microwave radio (wireless) platform for delivery of broadband services:
The Connected Communities project has signed a deal with supplier NEC UK for a communications infrastructure covering the islands of Lewis, Harris, North Uist, South Uist, Benbecula and Barra.
High capacity digital microwave links will form a backbone network spanning the islands and linking community nodes back to a central hub in Stornoway. End users will access the high-speed links via the nodes using wireless technology.
The Connected Communities pilot programme is part of the Highlands and Islands technology and social development project and the network is one of the UK's first to incorporate the recently-licensed 5.8Ghz band. It's good to see efforts being made to bring broadband access to even the most remote of UK communities.
