Tariam's Unlimited Satellite Broadband

Posted: 26th Oct, 2004 By: MarkJ
Broadband satellite ISP Tariam has today announced that it's moving all packages to an unlimited data model UPDATE: Despite the claims, one of our readers points out that the package is "still subject to a fair use policy", which is a LIMIT. The ISP has chosen not to reveal the specifics of this in public.:

Satellite Broadband provider Tariam has taken the bold step of being the first UK satellite ISP to announce it’s moving to an unlimited data model for all it’s European satellite broadband services.

Due to the high costs of satellite space segment, most European Satellite ISPs impose restrictions on the amount of data customers can upload and download at high speed.

In the past medium to heavy users of satellite based systems may find their connections being throttled to analogue modem speeds for part of the month. If you are using the connection for business, this can be a real headache.

Communications Director, Ben Cannon, said

“All companies would say that they are looking to give customers the best possible deal but we know that this is a really significant step in closing the perceived gap that exists in some peoples minds between the value you get from a satellite based system, and business ADSL.

“Our research shows that as well as having reliable, fast connections, customers also expect to feel comfortable working their broadband connection hard.

“We sell broadband to facilitate customers taking advantage of a wide range of business tools, as well as just browsing and email. If they can only do this for half the month, it defeats the object
”.

Ben went on to say “We will be moving to the unlimited data model on all our products, even our 2 Meg down, 1 Meg up connections. We are also now giving unlimited free technical support. This is going to be 24 hours a day, 365 days a year on some products.

“This reinforces a true business grade product which is what our satellite broadband is all about. High quality service and support the business user can rely on. If you think your ADSL product is a business grade solution, ask your provider what their timescale is for fixing a fault on your line or system!

“We are getting an increasing number of customers come to us who have ADSL over copper, but find the limited bandwidth, restricted data download and unreliable service no use for a business that relies on it’s broadband to function and grow
”.

Hold on! ADSL users finding limited bandwidth, restricted data download and strangest of all - unreliable service?

Currently only a minority of ADSL providers impose use restrictions and the vast majority have excellent service quality.

It would be quite a feat if Tariam were able to offer true unlimited data use via satellite, although only time will tell if it remains viable for them.
