3G broadband wireless mobile phone technology could be pushed up to a staggering 2.4Mbps if a Brazilian method were to be adopted. The Brazilian subsidiary of Motorola and Vivo has managed to develop a service to do just that - CDMA2000 1xEV-DO:
This 3G service will enable subscribers to experience high data rates -- at peak speeds of up to 2.4 Megabits per second (Mbps) -- that will provide them ready access to real-time services and applications such as e-mail, the Internet, music and file downloading, video and audio streaming.
VIVO and Motorola also demonstrated the exciting capabilities possible with CDMA during the Winter Festival in Campos do Jordao, Brazil. Festival goers visiting the VIVO booth at this annual event had a first-hand opportunity to enjoy enhanced mobile access via the VIVO network to the Internet and multimedia applications.
"Leading edge solutions that give our customers access to advanced mobile services, such as the CDMA2000 1X network solution, allow VIVO to offer 3G services to customers throughout Brazil in the areas where this technology is already available," said Javier Rodriguez, VIVO chief technology officer. "Now with this CDMA solution we can give our customers even faster access to data applications with download speeds that will be comparable to other high speed alternatives like DSL."The
ETMag item makes no mention of comparable costs, nor the 'actual' data throughput because 2.4Mbps appears to be more of a 'theoretical' maximum.
