Blueyonders (Telewest) new AUP, out sometime next week, has been shown to customers in their internal newsgroup blueyonder.feedback.
One of the main issues is their clarification of what p2p is and that p2p uploading (server mode) is against the AUP. While previously it was known to be server mode when uploading, they didn't seem to mind.
John Moorwood, head of marketing, had this to say.
"As you can see from this, use of P2P, when running in server mode, clearly contradicts these existing requirements. We are in the process of drafting an updated AUP which further clarifies this.
The idea that we are banning P2P amounts to suggesting we are also banning web, games, e-mail, news, and have been doing so since the current AUP was written, three years ago.
In reality, the new draft AUP is more relaxed if anything, as we are dropping the need for authentication and concurrent user limits for servers, in the expectation that the majority of our customers will continue to act in a reasonable and responsible manner.
We are not banning P2P. When run in server mode it will be treated as any other server [as it is now]. No more, no less."
P2p uploading is often regarded as part of the whole spirit of file-sharing and without it p2p may not be what it is today.
