WRBB, a Lincolnshire-based start-up, is preparing to offer pay-as-you-go (PAYG) rural broadband wireless services. Known simply as Sunshine, the setup will be based off the 802.11g (54mbs) and 802.11b (11mbs) wireless standards, with trials expected to start next month:
Sunshine is suitable for SMEs, SoHo, Domestic users, tele-workers and remote Virtual Private Networking (VPN) to corporate offices.
As well as the usual Internet pursuits, Sunshine can be used for streaming media, video conferencing, security cameras, online gaming, Internet telephony, server hosting, and remote control.
WRBB charges for the quantity of data you use, not the speed of the connection or the time you are connected. Packages have been designed to be compatible with existing usage patterns. Service plans are similar to cell-phone contracts with unused data being rolled over to the following month. Customers can buy additional data at any time. On-Demand pay-as-you-go service is available for visitors, children, and cash customers.
Prices begin at £10 a month, and are competitive with ADSL, Cable, and Satellite services. There is no minimum term and no setup or installation charge. It's worth noting that you'll still need to purchase a wireless card for your computer and, in some cases, possibly an antennae (Rough total = £70).
There are plans for a greater national rollout, although initial coverage will only be for Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, Stamford and Lincolnshire.
