The government has appointed a new broadband director; he will be responsible for bringing hi-speed access to rural areas. The director, former civil servant Stephen Speed, will also have to look after Westminsters overall broadband strategy; not an easy task:
The new post was announced by e-commerce minister Stephen Timms in a debate on broadband access in rural areas in the House of Commons last week.
A key element of the government's strategy is to use the combined weight of public sector buying power to drive infrastructure roll-out into rural areas.
The programme will play a big part in extending broadband availability, according to Timms.The
VNUNet item notes that the government is also expecting our position, currently sixth, in the broadband penetration table of the G7 to rise.
