Sniffout Cancels Home ADSL Service

Posted: 27th May, 2003 By: MarkJ
Two of our readers had noticed that UK ISP SniffOut was no longer selling their DreamTime ADSL package via the website; today the reason has become clear. Sadly customers have been issued with the following cancellation notice and, come Friday 25th July, the service will cease:

You will be aware that, throughout this year, we have implemented various changes in an attempt to improve the Internet access speed of your DreamTime ADSL package.

In January 2003, we advised customers that DreamTime was being contended through our network at approximately 20:1, less than half the 50:1 official contention ratio for BT's 512K Home ADSL product. Since that time we have significantly reduced the number of ADSL customers, by stopping new registrations and normal turnover. As a result, DreamTime now has significantly fewer subscribers than any other Sniff Out package, and the contention ratio through our own pipe has fallen to under 10:1 (though BT may still carry traffic at the published 50:1 through its network to our pipe).

Unfortunately, even at such this commercially unsustainable level, there has still not been any noticeable improvement in the access speeds for ADSL customers. Furthermore, even though DreamTime customer numbers have been deliberately reduced, there has been an increasing demand on resources to deal with ADSL admin matters for BT (new installations, relocations, repairs, BT network outages, upgrades, conversions, bill queries, etc.).

Based on the above information, we have conducted a detailed review of the DreamTime package. The conclusion is that we can only recover the true overall costs, and provide a satisfactory service, by charging a non-competitive monthly subscription.

We have therefore decided to stop provision of 512K ADSL Internet access, based upon the BT IP Stream Home 500 product, after Friday, 25th July 2003. Accordingly, we are now giving you notice that your DreamTime package will stop being available after that date.

We regret that this decision will now require you to move to another ISP if you wish to maintain an ADSL Internet connection. At the head of this email you will find your 'CBUK' number - this is the reference number used by BT to identify your particular ADSL circuit. It will be required should you wish to migrate your ADSL connection directly to another ISP.

Our Support staff are available on 0845 4582356 between 08:00 and 20:00 to assist you, as required. Alternatively you can email support@sniffout.co.uk

Unfortunately SniffOut is now in the unenviable position of being one of the first ‘active’ UK ADSL providers to cease its service. We can only hope that other ISPs are not suffering the same sort of ‘speed’ problems.
