BWCS, a telecoms consultancy, has reported that the total number of EU based public access broadband wireless LAN (Wi-Fi) hotspot locations will swell to more than 20,000 by 2007:
The report examines the twelve main hot-spot markets in Western Europe and forecasts that the number of sites with active wi-fi hot-spots will grow more than ten-fold over the next five years.
The bulk of the growth will come from locations such as cafes, bars and restaurants, say the analysts. However, the majority of revenues will be generated at the high-usage sites, such as airports and hotels, which are frequented by business travellers. The out-of-office worker will continue to be the mainstay of the wi-fi market for some time to come.Similarly the UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan, has said that wireless Internet access could help poorer countries catch up with the pace of technology change.
