THUS Welcomes USA SPAM Lawsuits

Operator THUS (Demon Internet) has welcomed a move by ISPs in the USA to file lawsuits against some of the most prolific spammers. Unsurprisingly THUS would like to see something similar occur in the UK:
Steve Kennedy, head of product futures at THUS, one of the UK's leading providers of voice, networking, Internet and contact centre services, makes the following response:
"THUS welcomes the move by leading ISPs in the US to file lawsuits against some of their most prolific spammers. These people are congesting networks across the world with unwanted and sometimes offensive or even fraudulent e-mails. In order to maintain the value of e-mail as a business communications channel, they must be stopped. Since the majority of spam is designed to generate revenue by persuading recipients to purchase something, the most effective way to stop the practice is to make spamming an unattractive business proposition. This can be achieved through heavy financial penalties for spamming. If this is done quickly and systematically when spam is reported, spam will soon stop delivering adequate return on investment.
"The changes in the US will benefit Internet users globally, including in the UK, as a large proportion of spammers are currently based in the US with relatively few operating from the UK. We would welcome similar action from governments around the world to ensure that spammers cannot find safe havens outside the US, particularly in regions like Eastern Europe. At the moment it would be very hard for ISPs to launch a similar action in the UK, as there is no legislation specifically outlawing spam - instead, such practices have to be reported under breach of terms and conditions or computer misuse laws. This is time-consuming, and the longer the action takes, the longer the spammer can keep pumping out messages, or they just move to another provider under another name before action can be taken.
"In the meantime, there is action the industry can take to make spam less of an inconvenience and expense for its customers. THUS introduced a free spam filtering service on the Demon ISP servers at the beginning of the year, which has significantly reduced the number of unwanted messages that our customers have to deal with."
