Europe Prepares For Video Over xDSL

Posted: 24th Feb, 2004 By: MarkJ
Shorecliff Communications, ahead of their 2nd TelecomVideo Europe conference in Belgium during mid-May, has stated their belief that Europe will be the next proving ground for video services delivered over DSL networks:

EUROPE TO FOLLOW GLOBAL TREND OF BROADBAND VIDEO OVER DSL

Europe will be the next proving ground for advanced video services delivered over DSL networks, according to Shorecliff Communications, the producers of a forthcoming conference, 2nd TelecomVideo Europe, May 17-19, 2004 at the Sheraton Brussels Airport Hotel in Belgium. The event is already sponsored by leading technology suppliers, and is being endorsed by a range of media partners.

Alcatel, the world leader in DSL, with more than 33 million DSL lines shipped, is the event's Signature Sponsor. In addition, global suppliers Allied Telesyn, NDS, SkyStream Networks, and Bitband will also sponsor the event.

An annual event, the 2nd TelecomVideo Europe provides detailed education and networking opportunities for European telecom companies seeking sustainable models and maximising ARPU, to remain competitive by offering in-home entertainment services to subscribers. As broadband deployment across Europe continues to accelerate, the opportunities for VoDSL will increase substantially.

“TelecomVideo Europe is the premier event for telecom service providers, business leaders and supplier organisations in the VoDSL arena,” commented Carolyn Herr, Event Director at Shorecliff, “and will be the most content-centric addressing near-term commercial and technological issues confronting deployment and market adoption”.

Case studies of several European Video over DSL deployments will be provided at the 3-day event, as well as presentations and panel discussions on IPTV, VOD architecture, Triple Play business models, video compression technologies, the role of middleware, interactive television, digital rights management and content acquisition strategies.

Commenting on the event, Carmel Gago, Senior Manager of Business Development for Lucent Technologies described it as, “The one you want to attend if you are interested in video for telcos.”

TelecomVideo Europe is a production of Shorecliff Communications, and sponsored by Broadband Content Delivery Forum, Advanced-Television, Broadband TV News, NTCA, BroadGroup, RockMedia, ScreenDigest, Cable & Satellite International and Hidden Wires. The event has also been endorsed by Eurescom. Registration information is available online http://www.scievents.com/telecomvideo or by telephone at 1 (949) 443.3735.

There are already several such services available in the UK, although uptake has been somewhat limited, largely due to a lack of common knowledge and some quality / cost issues.
