The BBC is planning to launch '
The Creative Archive', which will contain video clips and TV coverage of the forthcoming Olympic Games and natural history etc. Typically the content is likely to benefit broadband users the most:
"The Creative Archive will give everyone in the UK the freedom to search for and access clips from the BBC's television and radio archives via the BBC's website," said Ashley Highfield, director of new media and technology at the BBC.
According to the BBC, the Creative Archive initiative will launch in autumn 2004 with the initial focus on factual radio and television content, such as natural history footage. People will get free access to around 2,000 clips of up to three minutes long.
Once you have downloaded clips from the BBC website you can keep them forever, manipulate and add to them and pass clips on to one another. The
Web-User item notes how the BBC believes that such content will help to push the demand and use of broadband services. We'll be rather sly and make a related point below.
Sadly those signing up to BTs 'Basic Broadband' package won't be able to benefit without shooting themselves in the foot. The 1Gb per month limit would easily be topped by use of such a service.
