BT is currently testing 10Km coverage ADSL in the Milton Keynes area, yet some lines may require additional maintenance for this to work and the operator may load such costs onto the consumer:
The telco will run a broadband trial in Milton Keynes this summer that could make broadband services available to 1m more people. It'll extend the range of BT's 512Kbps ADSL line from 6km to 10km, but customers could be forced to pay for repairs to their internal wiring if it contributes to high line loss.
'If the vast majority of people's lines provide a reasonable service we might proceed on the proviso that some lines won't work,' said a BT Wholesale spokesman. 'Where internal wiring is having a significant impact on line loss we'll need to get an engineer to the customer's premises, and we'd need to figure out where the costs would fall.'
The spokesman said it wasn't BT's responsibility to repair a home or businesses' internal wiring, and said customers would be left to pay. One solution would be to install a wireless router at the point where the line first enters the premises.
It's far too early to make any judgement call regarding what BT might or might not do. Hopefully we should know more in a few months time. More @ NewMediaZero.
