edNET Expands With £1.2m Datacentre

Posted: 05th May, 2004 By: MarkJ
UK business ISP edNET has begun construction of a carrier-grade co-location facility in Scotland, which is due to open in late summer 2004:

edNET set to build £1.2m Datacentre by Summer 2004

edNET, the leading business class ISP, is set to build a carrier-grade co-location facility in Scotland which is due to open in late Summer 2004. The building, which will see the first struts of steelwork go up today, will span over 10,000sq ft and will include a Network Operations and Services Centre, plus six separate data rooms covering 1,000sq ft each. Looking ahead, the company has purchased more than two acres of land to allow for the addition of at least another two facilities of similar size.

Commenting on the project, Aydin Kurt-Elli, CEO of edNET said: "Our current co-location costs were not scaling well for us and when we looked into our options we identified that costs were high simply due to a lack of competition in the Scottish marketplace. Consequently, in the long run, building a £1.2 million facility was a cheaper option than continuing to use the facilities currently available. This will allow us to offer much more competitive rates for ISPs and large corporates, as well as making co-location an option for progressive SMEs."

edNET has looked at other such facilities globally and will take a phased approach to its development, in line with customer demand. For example, the data rooms will be installed separately to allow for an incremental fit out, thereby reducing the risk and cost associated with the initial construction project.

Within each room, space provision will be flexible, accommodating large or small numbers of servers, depending on the scale of client IT infrastructures. With a 4-hour fire rating for each individual room, inert gas fire suppression, and diverse UPS systems for power protection at a modular level, risks of large system failures in the building and it's support infrastructure is significantly reduced compared to many larger facilities with a highly centralized design.

Being a network provider, edNET also understands the need for connectivity, so use of dark fibre will provide high capacity access to numerous existing networks from day one. The progressive use of Metro Ethernet over fibre means that this can be provided cost effectively.

Once the facility is built, edNET will move its entire technical systems and support team from its corporate HQ in Leith.

Kurt Elli enthusiastically concluded: "The scope is huge. Co-location with an ISP is fast becoming the most cost effective option for disaster recovery and on-line backup, as well as for remote and home working."
