The London Internet Exchange (LINX) has signed a new deal with telx that aims to offer American ISPs an opportunity to establish a 'virtual presence' at LINX via a connection at telx:
LINX AND telx OFFER TRANS ATLANTIC BOOST TO INTERNET
Europe's largest Internet exchange point has signed an agreement with telx in the USA which could improve the speed and reliability of the Internet across the Atlantic and the rest of the world.
The London Internet Exchange (LINX) is one of several exchange points worldwide where Internet service providers (ISPs) and others exchange traffic between their networks. Exchanging traffic in this way offers ISPs economy, reliability and speed - benefits which can be passed on to users who will gain swifter and more certain access to web pages or e-mails.
To obtain membership of LINX, and join the 140 ISPs from around the world which exchange traffic there, ISPs have previously had to site hardware at one of LINX's eight London sites.
Now LINX has signed a deal with telx - the first and largest carrier-neutral interconnection facility in New York, USA - which offers American ISPs an opportunity to establish a 'virtual presence' at LINX via a connection at telx.
It also offers LINX members a facility to establish a point of presence in New York, using the trans-Atlantic connections of companies present at telx.
The agreement is part of the 'LINX from Anywhere' campaign under which some LINX members are offering other ISPs private point-to-point Ethernet connections on their international networks. The connections terminate in a dedicated Ethernet port, with an individual IP address controlled by the customer ISP, on the member's router at LINX.
Under the LINX/ telx deal, the USA end of the link can be hosted at the telx core interconnection facility located within New York's premier carrier hotel, 60 Hudson Street.
telx does not itself provide the trans-Atlantic connectivity but facilitates it. More than 150 carriers and enterprise operators have hardware at the telx facility - many of them existing LINX members who could offer the 'tunnelled', totally secure, connections needed for a customer ISP in the USA to establish a virtual presence in London.
As a telx partner, LINX will be able to participate in the telx Customer Business Exchange, a unique invitation-only, networking event on 23 April in New York. LINX can also cross-market its partnership offerings within the telx communications marketplace..
In addition, telx becomes a LINX Partner. The partnership programme permits Internet industry suppliers that do not qualify as LINX members to participate in LINX member activities and to share in joint industry initiatives. It fosters new business relationships and promotes wider participation in LINX debates on technical and regulatory issues.
Partner companies are able to attend LINX meetings and events and benefit from such things as space on the LINX website, the option to use a LINX partner logo, coverage in LINX publications and the opportunity to meet and mix with members.
Hunter Newby said: "Becoming a LINX Partner allows us to get closer to European ISPs thinking of making a move into the USA."
