InterViVo has announced a breakthrough in Internet transmission technology, which uses the mains water supply (oh no.. it's started already):
IP Over Water Will Revolutionise the Net
InterViVo, the company founded by internet pioneer and visionary Peter Dawe, announces a breakthrough in Internet transmission technology. According to the company this breakthrough will dramatically reduce costs and bring to life the concept of the Internet being available everywhere for everyone.
Now we can use water, the most ubiquitous substance on this planet, to transmit IP packets, said Dawe. The local loop is already provided by the water utility companies while the oceans, seas and rivers of this world provides the zero cost backbone.
The technology is easy to replicate and install and is very inexpensive, said Mark Turner, Technology Director at InterViVo. It is based on the Hydro Delivery Data Cable (HDDC) which connects your IP enabled device to the mains water supply, he said.
HDDC technology is a unique combination of bio- and silicon technology. Just as a shark can detect and discern a molecule of blood amongst billions of molecules of water, so the HDDC can find the molecule of water with your IP packet on it within the water supply.
Mark Hugo, Sales and Marketing Director at InterViVo is optimistic for a rapid roll out. We have been getting very positive feedback from the water companies. Every other utility - from railways to electricity suppliers and even phone companies - has had a go at shipping packets and none very successfully. This is the dawn of a new era. It looks like the dot com bubble hasnt burst yet.
Bare in mind that this press release is actually due for release tomorrow, which is the 1st April ;-).
It's worth pointing out that scientists actually came up with a way to transfer data through water last year, yet it was by no means at a viable stage of development or application.
