Over the next two years the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) will be developing a new wireless technology that allows commuters to access the Internet from trains and cars travelling at up to 155mph:
The technology is intended to deliver 1Mbit/s bandwidth over ranges of up to 15km between transmitter and client device.
The IEEE P802.20 Mobile Broadband Wireless Access (MBWA) standard will transmit signals in radio frequency wavebands below 3.5GHz. Any commercial service will require the endorsement of the government's Radiocommunications Agency if it is to be used in the UK.
"We hope to make MBWA a viable option for transferring large amounts of data via the Internet, intranets and enterprise systems to mobile users within metropolitan area networks," commented IEEE P802.20 working group chairman Mark Klerer. It's increasingly clear that broadband wireless mobile phone standards, such as 3G (UTMS), could launch only to face stiff competition from Wi-Fi style Hotspot services.
