Jupiter Research has predicted that online Internet surfers will pay $2Billion for commercial content during 2003, which compares with $1.6Bn during 2002.
Despite the 30% growth it's still believed that '
paid for' online content will NOT generate the big revenues that some had expected and shall thus remain a small market:
The company also predicted that paid content will then grow at a 20 percent rate through 2007 to reach $5.4bn.
"Consumers are slowly opening their pocketbooks for paid content," Jupiter Research director David Card said in a statement. "However, for at least the next 18 to 24 months, most online media companies should generate 60 to 70% of their revenues from advertising."It's doubtful that
ZDNet's news item will come as much of a shock to anybody simply because the amount of FREE content has always dwarfed any commercial aspirations.
