UK ISP Tiscali has used Oftels revised broadband definition (128Kbps+) to hit back at critics. The provider had been attacked before for labelling its 150Kbps service as broadband; many felt that wasn't justified:
After launching its 150kbps service, Tiscali attracted flak from industry rivals about the dangers of defining such service speeds as broadband. Many believe this will miseducate the market, but Tiscali said it is doing quite the opposite.
"Tiscali is moving to a simpler explanation of 'up to 3x, 5x and 10x faster than dial-up' for our 150kbps, 256kbps and 512kbps services - this is easier for the consumer to understand," said Tiscali PR and communications manager Jody Haskayne.
"This is affordable entry level broadband with mass market appeal. We introduced it at a critical pricepoint aimed at stimulating new uptake of broadband," she added. There may indeed be plenty of demand and adopters for lower speed 128/150Kbps products, but should that be how we measure broadband as a technology?
