BT Forces SniffOut Unmetered Closure!

Posted: 14th Oct, 2003 By: MarkJ
In a shock announcement, BT has forced UK ISP SniffOut to close most of its unmetered dialup services following a legal dispute between the two companies. Thanks to one of our readers (Terry) for forwarding the news:

Termination of unmetered and LiteTime accounts

We have to advise that we shall be ceasing the provision of SmartTime, TimeOut, PeakTime and LiteTime accounts after 14th October 2003.

Renky Ltd., the company which owns the Sniff Out brand, has been pursuing a significant breach of contract claim against British Telecom for over 12 months. Although BT has made a settlement offer, it has not been accepted by Renky, whose claim also covers the remaining periods of certain current BT supply contracts.

In an apparent attempt to finalise the amount being claimed by Renky, BT has decided to terminate the relevant supply contracts, with immediate effect. Whilst Renky disputes BT’s right to take this action, the result will be that SmartTime, TimeOut, PeakTime and LiteTime accounts provided by Sniff Out will cease after 14th October 2003.

We apologise for the short notice being given, which has been governed by BT’s actions.

No further subscription payments will be claimed. We have cancelled the FuturePay Agreement used to pay monthly subscriptions. We shall be reviewing unused subscription balances over the next few weeks.

After the BT connection ceases, we shall be automatically transferring SmartTime, TimeOut and PeakTime accounts to the default Classic option. The dial-in access number for that package is 0845 3600100.

LiteTime accounts will be automatically transferred to the DialPlus option. The dial-in access number for that package is 0844 4440000

Our Support staff are available on 0845 4582356 between 08:00 and 20:00 to assist you, as required. Alternatively you can email support@sniffout.co.uk.

It's not clear exactly what's been going on, which makes it rather hard to judge who's really to blame. Sadly it's the honest customers that end up getting caught in the middle - such action without better warning is an act of utter disgust.
