BT has announced a new offer for residential customers that combines BT Broadband (ADSL), BT Home Networking (LAN) and BT Openzone public Wi-Fi in one simple package:

broadband leaves home as BT BROADENS wi-fi net FoR residential CUSTOMERS

BT today announced a first for the UK, by offering residential customers BT Broadband, BT Home Networking and BT Openzone public Wi-Fi in one simple package.

The BT Broadband Traveller package combines a home BT Broadband service, a wireless home network and instant access to internet and email on the move, at broadband speed via BT’s Openzone network.

The BT Openzone service will give residential customers the chance to experience the same broadband power and speed they have at home when they are out and about. All they will need is a Wi-Fi enabled laptop or PDA, and with an increasing number of new devices coming with Wi-Fi capability as standard, this is expected to prove a powerful option for people who want internet or email access on the move.

The launch of BT’s complete wireless package marks a significant step forward for its plan to boost awareness and use of Wi-Fi in the UK and makes the concept of broadband access at home all the more attractive. The BT Broadband Traveller is the latest in a number of Wi-Fi initiatives BT has introduced since the Openzone service was launched in June 2002. BT customers now have access to 1,155 sites nationwide, meaning BT is on track to beat its target of 4,000 by June 2004.

Steve Andrews, managing director, products and enterprises, BT Retail, said: “BT Broadband Traveller is a significant step forward both for Wi-Fi and broadband adoption in the UK. It makes Wi-Fi on the move easily available and means customers don’t have to step back into a narrowband world when they leave the front door. It also means that, with the same package, home BT Broadband users can now connect to their high-speed internet and email accounts, or even to the latest gaming site, without the need for wires, whether they are at home in the kitchen or away for the weekend.

Today’s announcement shows we are working hard to meet our promise to make Wi-Fi technology open to as many customers as possible. Whilst Wi-Fi technology is great for business travellers, it is not exclusively for business. This shows wireless broadband on the move has benefits for everyone.
”

BT Openzone sites are located in places ranging from Hilton Hotels and Roadchef service stations to BAA airport terminals and conference centres such as Olympia, London.

The BT Broadband Traveller package is a combination of BT Broadband – which is a highly successful ADSL provider - BT’s Home Networking and BT Openzone services. Wireless broadband access across all home PCs costs from £129.99 as a one-off cost and then a monthly direct debit payment of £27 for continued broadband access. Users of the Broadband Traveller package will receive BT Openzone access free for the first 3 months. After this, the BT Openzone service is charged on a pence per minute basis.
