UK telecoms and ISP group Easynet has confirmed that it has now unbundled almost 120 local telephone exchanges, putting it ahead of Bulldog and in a strong position to offer BT competitive ADSL services:
Firms and individuals in areas unbundled by Easynet can then sign up for its broadband products, some of which are faster than those offered by BT Wholesale. These include 2Mbps and 4Mbps leased line packages, and ADSL at speeds up to 8Mbps.
Easynet reported that Oracle and retail group Debenhams have both become Easynet customers, helping the company to increase revenues by 33 percent to £55.2m. Profits rose 66 percent to £28m.
Local loop unbundling (LLU) was introduced as a method of bringing more wholesale competition to Europe's telecoms sector. It lets rival telcos take over customers' phone lines from the incumbent operator and offer their own services, rather than just reselling the incumbent's products.Despite all this
Oftel has revealed that just 4,600 lines, out of a possible 20 million, have changed hands via LLU. More @
