UK ISP Virgin Media (VM) has begun informing its existing customers about a raft of price adjustments to their current phone, broadband and TV services that will take effect from 1st May 2009. Some of the worst hit will be the providers existing
M broadband package users, who will have to stump up for an extra £2 per month. However the majority of prices will remain unchanged.
A Virgin Media spokesperson informed ISPreview : "We have written to all affected customers to explain the changes, which include a small increase of £1 for 'XL' TV," they said. "Whilst there will be a small increase of £2 for our 'M' broadband, as part of our pricing review we have also recently reduced our 'L' broadband tier by £4 and our 'XL' broadband by £1.
Having previously upgraded all of our 10Mb customers to 20Mb and our 4Mb customers to 10Mb, we are now bringing the full benefits of our fibre optic network and our recent upgrade to DOCSIS 3.0 technology to our 2Mb (M) customers."
Virgin Media stressed to us that its increases were small and the many service improvements customers have received (faster speeds, improved TV options [iPlayer, ITV Player etc.] and the return of Sky channels) continued to make its products "
fantastic value" for money.
In addition there will be a new monthly cost of £1.25 for paper bills, which will be partially removed for those opting to use Virgin Media's "
environmentally friendly" eBilling solution, though we suspect that some customers will be less than convinced by that.
The spokesperson said: "We're also removing the £1 cost for itemised billing so customers can now get detailed billing information for free. Customers can easily opt out of receiving paper bills by registering online, whilst those customers who would prefer to continue to receive paper bills still have the option to do so. Customers already receiving a £1 discount for ebilling remain unaffected by this change."
VM will also be increasing the discount on their Talk Mobile call plan from 25% to 33%, meaning customers taking this option can save more on calls to mobiles on any network. However standard mobile rates will see an increase of 1p per minute.
Call rates to 0844 numbers will increase by 2p per minute, and premium rates will increase by 5p per minute, with some individual call features rising by 25p; all customers will continue to receive free weekend voice calls to landlines as part of the £11 line rental.
