Simon Gibson, a technology expert and former member of Ofcom's UK Consumer Panel, has warned that the biggest broadband issue for Wales is demand as opposed to supply. Recent figures from Ofcom showed that Welsh uptake stood at just 45% of households, which compares with Northern Ireland on 52%, Scotland at 53% and England at 58%.

New research from Informa Telecoms & Media reveals that global IPTV (Internet TV) subscriptions reached the 20 million mark at the end of 2008, which is based on figures released via 120 IPTV operators in 60 countries around the world. Hong Kong (China) leads the TOP 10 IPTV countries (market share) with 55.21%, followed by France on 30.03%, while the UK came 13th with 418,000 subscribers.

The European Union (EU) has given preliminary approval to new Roaming Regulation that aims to cap the voice and data roaming charges levied by mobile phone operators (e.g. when using Mobile Broadband outside of the UK). The proposals could be approved by July 2009 and would also impose a welcome €50 (£46) upper limit on data roaming charges, requiring the operator to warn customers if they hit it.

UK ISP Andrews and Arnold (AAISP) has offered to tackle difficult broadband (ADSL) line faults and pledged to "take on problems other ISPs leave behind". The promise to new customers is supported by a special money back offer, which comes into effect if they fail to resolve the problem within one month. However this pledge does not apply to those migrating in from unbundled (LLU) lines and only supports those with a line on BT Wholesale's network.

Anti-Virus firms have issued warnings about a new self-replicating computer program (worm) known as Psyb0t, which has the unique ability to turn home broadband routers and certain ADSL modems into Botnets. Such botnets are generally malicious and can be used to propagate a virus, distribute spam, attack other systems (DDoS) and or for stealing your personal data.

Virgin Media's CEO, Neil Berkett, has revealed that the operators cable based ISP services will be able to offer broadband speeds of up to 150Mbps by 2012. Virgin Media has long claimed that their current network could handle 100Mbps+, though it had previously sighted a lack of demand as the reason for not launching such an option.

The latest research from Infonetics has revealed that the number of global Mobile Broadband subscribers grew by 125% in 2008, hitting 210.5 million, and are expected to top 1 billion by 2013. Sales of Mobile Broadband PC cards and embedded cards (Netbooks etc.) also topped £2.79 billion.

The Open Rights Group (ORG) has issued a public letter to the Chief Privacy Officers, or nearest equivalent, for seven of the world’s largest website giants - Microsoft, Google (YouTube), Facebook, AOL (Bebo), Yahoo!, Amazon and eBay - asking them to boycott Phorm. The controversial Phorm system works with UK broadband ISPs to monitor what websites you visit for use in targeted advertising campaigns.

The Joseph Rowntree Reform Trust (JRRT) has issued a new report slamming the government’s plans for a Communications Database (Data Retention), which would intercept and log every UK ISP users e-mail headers, visited websites and telephone history, among other things. The report warns that the public are often, "neither served nor protected by the increasingly complex and intrusive holdings of personal information invading every aspect of our lives."

Both O2 (Telefonica) and Vodafone have just agreed to a major new UK network sharing deal, which will also apply to their infrastructure in Germany, Spain, Ireland and eventually the Czech Republic too. The deal follows rumours of such a move earlier this month (here) and should deliver cost savings worth hundreds of millions of pounds over the next decade.

BT has just released a full list of local UK telephone exchange locations where, from early 2010, its new super fast (up to 60Mbps) fibre optic based (FTTC) broadband services will become available from. This follows Saturday’s news when BT outlined its plans to deploy the product in several Scottish cities first.

BT has revealed new information about the roll-out of its £1.5bn programme to deploy super fast fibre optic (Fibre to the Premise/Cabinet, FTTP/C) broadband to as many as 10 million homes (40%) by 2012 (original news). Scotland will become one of the first places to benefit from early next year, with more than 34,000 homes and businesses in Edinburgh and Glasgow receiving speeds of up to 40Mbps and potentially 60Mbps.

Hitwise has revealed that UK Internet traffic to broadband Video websites (BBC iPlayer, YouTube etc.) has increased by 40.7% over the last 12 months. During February 2009, 1 in every 35 UK Internet visits went to a specialist Video website, up from 1 in every 50 in February 2008.

BSkyB ( Sky Broadband ) has issued a public response to Lord Carter's interim Digital Britain report, which amongst other things warns against "public intervention in the [NEXT GENERATION BROADBAND] market" and calls on Virgin Media to open up its cable network to help spur competition with BT's future fibre optic services. The provider also warned against adopting net neutrality friendly rules, which they claimed "[RISKED] significant unforeseen distortions".

Logicas latest independent UK consumer awareness study of 1000 people into mobile Internet and Mobile Broadband access has revealed that 40% of consumers admit to heavy usage of mobile Internet services. However 77% would switch operators if their provider proved unable to meet their needs.

The i3 Group (formerly H2O Networks) has warned that the government is in danger of creating a digital divide by dis-incentivising investment in superfast connectivity unless it reviews the issue of fibre taxation. This is because, despite offering support for future networks, they continue to tax the rateable value of the basic infrastructure.

The WhatDoTheyKnow? site, which uses the freedom of information act to locate interesting bits of data, has revealed which UK operators and ISPs are still awaiting Ofcom approval for their Code of Practice (CoP) and Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) schemes. The list of CSPs includes a few surprising names, such as THUS and Tesco.

In-Stat reports that at the end of 2008, only 11% of worldwide wireless subscriptions were 3G. By the end of 2013, the percentage of 3G and 4G subscriptions will reach 30%. 3G and 4G are most commonly associated with a new generation of Internet connected mobile phones and Mobile Broadband services.
