Broadband benchmarking experts at
Epitiro have revealed that the average Mobile Broadband download speed in the UK is just 0.9Mbps, which falls well short of the government’s 2Mbps universal minimum broadband speed (USO) target for 2012. The result was concluded from 1.4 million tests conducted around the UK, revealing that Mobile Broadband users typically receive just 24% of the top headline speed advertised by operators.
The Thinkbroadband item added that average upload speeds managed to be quite respectable at 270Kbps (0.27Mbps). Uploads are usually significantly slower than download performance, with most up to 8Mbps (ADSLMAX) land-line broadband packages typically delivering uploads of around 400Kbps (0.4Mbps) to customers.
Other metrics measured included web browsing which appeared to be 34% slower than on fixed ADSL connections. Ping times, an important metric for online game playing came in at around 150ms which is too high for acceptable gaming performance. Another metric that affects real-time applications such as gaming and Voice over IP is packet loss, a measure of data loss. One unnamed provider suffered 2.1% whilst the average was 0.67%, with the lowest at 0.1%.
Sadly it's not known how the results break-down by operator, which seems to be a common trend with most of the recent independent mobile operator tests.
