UPDATE ISP BT to Double 24Mbps UK Broadband Coverage by Spring 2011

Posted: 24th Sep, 2009 By: MarkJ
BT Wholesale is reportedly gearing up to announce the next phase of its 21st Century Network ( 21CN ) based 'up to' 24Mbps ADSL2+ broadband technology rollout, which works over the old/existing copper wire based BT infrastructure. The move will see BT's coverage of the service rise from 40% of UK homes and businesses to 75% by the spring of 2011.

Presently the majority of BT's network can receive download speeds of up to 8Mbps (0.8Mbps upload) via ADSL MAX technology, although ADSL2+ increases this maximum rate to 24Mbps (2.5Mbps upload). Sadly many consumers will only seem minor to moderate speed improvements with the service and, due to a few technical issues, some might even see a slight decline.

However we do wish BT and others would stop calling ADSL2+ a 'Next Generation' technology, which unwisely blurs the line between new fibre optic / wireless networks and the operators aged copper infrastructure. Indeed ADSL2+ services have been around for several years now, with Be Broadband ( O2 ) launching the first UK service; BT is playing catch-up.

The announcement is expected shortly and we will update this news item with the appropriate details as and when it surfaces.

UPDATE - 1:17pm

BT has just confirmed the above news and, most importantly of all, pledged to reduce WBC prices (one of the products they use to deliver ADSL2+) to ISPs from January 2010, with bandwidth charges being dropped by almost 50% and WBC rental costs standardised at the lowest current price.

The rest of BT's press release echo’s what we said above, adding that the intended expansion will take this availability to 55% by Spring 2010 and then to around 75% depending on customer demand, by Spring 2011.

Cameron Rejali, Managing Director, Products, BT Wholesale said:

“Today’s announcement is further evidence of BT’s commitment to deliver next-generation broadband services across the UK. By expanding the footprint and reducing wholesale prices, we are helping communications providers deliver faster speeds to more customers, essential benefits in the tough economic and competitive environment we face today.

We plan to reduce WBC prices to communications providers from January 2010 with bandwidth charges being dropped by almost 50 per cent and WBC rental costs standardised at the lowest current price, too.”

Both ISPs and customers should be pleased to hear about the price drop and we hope to see more specific details on that soon. Lord knows a lot of BT based ISPs would love to be more competitive with their cheaper unbundled ( LLU ) competition.
