The boss of Clear Mobitel, a fixed line operator, has hinted that it could introduce a super-fast 4G Mobile Broadband service on the island of Guernsey, but only if the Office of Utility Regulation allows it.
Andrew Elston, Director of Regulatory Affairs at Clear Mobitel, told BBC News Online :
"We feel the state of competition in terms of broadband in the island of Guernsey is very, very serious, that there is a lack of real competition because all operators who are currently in play there are dependent on the incumbent fixed wire access."
Elston claims that the service itself could theoretically launch before the end of 2010. However it remains unclear whether Ofcom will grant permission or what 4G technology might be used.
Long Term Evolution ( LTE ) might be the favoured choice for mainland UK but on an island with a fresh dedicated Mobile Broadband network its conceivable that WiMAX might actually be better.
