iBAHN's
10YearsofBroadband website (aka - online community hub), has revealed the results of its survey into consumer thoughts and feelings on the current state of UK broadband networks and services. It reveals that 59% disagree with the governments new 50p +vat per month broadband tax on all fixed telephone lines. However 72% were concerned or very concerned that the UK is reaching the limit of its current broadband network.
The results echo a similar sentiment to those who voted in one of our recent surveys, which found that just 11.7% of respondents believed the 50p tax it to be the best way forward (
here). Despite that, 61.3% did feel that a 100Mbps connection would benefit them. Most appeared to prefer to the Conservative party proposals to use 3.5% of the TV Licence fee currently earmarked for the Digital Switchover budget.
iBAHN's study also reported that the biggest challenge for broadband networks over the next 10 years will be increased data traffic (38%), demand for higher speeds (19%) and security (16%); 92% felt that security is important or essential when connecting to a broadband network. Both rural access (15%) and mobile access (12%) came lowest.
When asked what improvements consumers would like to see from broadband ISPs some 48% demanded anytime/anywhere access, which could indicate greater demand for bundled Mobile Broadband services; at present this is only offered by a small number of mainstream providers. Ironically the second biggest improvement request was "
Faster mobile device connectivity" (22%). High Definition TV services also came third with 15%, which we assume to mean HD IPTV .
