A new survey of 2,000 online British adults, conducted by credit rating experts at
Experian, has revealed that over half admitted to making their passwords available on the internet. It also found that three of the most frequently used passwords were town of birth (18%), name of your past school (24%) and date of birth(27%); data that most people also tend to publish on public social networking website profiles.
Experian's Pete Turner said:
"The message of ID fraud is still not being heard. The internet is accessible to almost everyone and as the number of users grow, so do those using it for criminal purposes. Users need to be aware of what information they are giving out online."
Furthermore 18% said they would publish their town of birth on an internet profile, yet only 3% would give it out to a stranger over the phone. Similarly 51% used the same password for some or all of their online accounts :baffled: . To make matters worse, 52% wouldn't change their password unless their account had already been compromised or they are prompted to do so.
