Residents and businesses in the Chineham (Basingstoke, UK) area, a civil parish that is home to around 3000 households, have launched a new petition aimed at improving the villages woeful broadband internet connectivity speeds.
33-year-old Lindsay Barker, a local businesswoman and petition founder, told the Basingstoke Gazette:"Chineham is considered an affluent area of Basingstoke, reflected by house prices and council tax band – so why are we still receiving such poor broadband in the area?
As a customer, I would be prepared to pay more for an improved service that ranges up to 20mb, but currently object to paying the same amount every month for 1mb speeds as someone receiving 8mb. What other service do you pay for and only receive one eighth of the goods?"
It's understood that BT has been upgrading cabinets and exchanges in Basingstoke to help deliver faster broadband speeds, although many areas, including Chineham, appear to have been overlooked. One unidentified firm has even dug a trench to deploy fibre optic broadband into the area, although a local councillor was told that it would ONLY be for business use.
To sign the Chineham petition residents should visit
ipetition.com/petition/chinehambroadband, although we were unable to get this link working (looks like the newspaper missed an 's' in their URL). Upon doing some digging we found two more related petitions, so it's probably best to sign both.
