Akamai has revealed its latest State of the Internet Q2 2010 report and reported that the average UK broadband internet connection speed has increased from 3.8Mbps in Q1 (previous report) to 3.9Mbps in Q2 (Ofcom's May 2010 data recorded 5.2Mbps). The global average connection speed also grew from 1.7Mbps to 1.8Mbps over the same period, with South Korea topping the scales on 17Mbps.

George Osborne, Chancellor of the coalition UK government, confirmed today that his Spending Review would ultimately use a total of £530m over the next four years (until 2015) to help bring faster broadband internet access to rural areas. A significant amount of that will also come from the BBC.

Ofcom has opened a new review into the performance of its official Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) schemes, which are provided to consumers by Otelo and CISAS. ADR's are exist to help UK customers of broadband ISPs and or phone providers get their complaints resolved.

Broadband internet and phone provider TalkTalk UK has teamed up with Binatone, a corded and cordless home phone developer, to launch its own range of six differently styled branded landline phone handsets. The phones, which are now on sale in Argos stores (soon to be followed by Tesco, Dixon's and Comet), cost from £17.99 to £69.99.

Internet search engine and advertising giant Google is in hot water once again after an official investigation by Canada's Privacy Commissioner condemned the firm for "inappropriately [collecting] personal information from unsecured wireless networks" (e.g. e-mails, usernames, passwords, phone numbers and addresses). Earlier this year Google admitted to unknowingly using their StreetView cars to map peoples home Wi-Fi wireless networks in multiple countries, including the UK.

The United Nations (UN) reports that the total number of world Internet users has doubled since 2005 and will hit 2 Billion by the end of 2010. Home users been the main driving force, pushing the figure up from 1.3bn in 2009 to 1.6bn by the end of 2010.

Communications and networking provider Entanet has waded into last week's ruling by Ireland's High Court (here), where copyright holders tried and failed to force a local broadband ISP (UPC) into adopting a "Three Strikes" system of warning and disconnection for customers suspected of involvement with "illegal" P2P file sharing.

Business ISP Star UK, a provider of on-demand computing and communication services to businesses, has conducted some analysis of what we can expect to see from average download and upload speeds on new fibre optic broadband connections. Apparently 21Mbps (Megabits per second) will be about average for downloading and 9Mbps for uploads.

Cisco Systems third study of world fixed-line and Mobile Broadband Internet leadership, which is based on research conducted by the Saïd Business School at Oxford University, has placed the UK in 18th position and outside of those countries deemed to be prepared for the internet "applications of tomorrow".

Satellite ISP Avanti has revealed that the first of its new generation broadband satellites, HYLAS 1, which will offer download speeds of up to 8Mbps to everybody in the country from around £25 per month, will officially launch in to Earth orbit (space) on 25th November 2010.
