A UK community network specialist in
Next Generation Access (NGA) broadband services, Fibrestream ( NextGenUs ), has uploaded a new video to show what happens when a rural village like
Ashby de la Launde in
Lincolnshire goes from receiving sub-1Mbps Mobile Broadband speeds to getting 72Mbps via a "
super-fast" fibre optic
Fibre-to-the-Home ( FTTH ) connection.
Regular readers may recall that we first revealed Fibrestream's project back in June 2010 (
here), with rollout of the village's
100Mbps (Megabits per second) capable network finally beginning in August (
here). What's most important is that this privately funded and community owned network was partly built by the community itself and thus
hasn't required even one penny of Taxpayers Money to deliver.
We can only imagine what might be achieved if the government thought more outside of the box and gave isolated rural communities the option of building their own network. It could easily end up being cheaper and faster than funding quick-fix style Satellite solutions or waiting years for Mobile Broadband operators to improve their coverage.
