ISP
NYnet, a UK public sector controlled private limited company that was formed by
North Yorkshire County Council (NYCC) with funding from
Yorkshire Forward and the EU in 2007, has announced that
150 residents and businesses in
Farndale,
Blakey,
Bransdale,
Rudland,
Beadlam Rigg and
East Moors (North Yorkshire) will soon benefit from a new next generation broadband service.
The communities are all largely isolated rural villages where very few people currently live. Most of their existing
internet access services are either very slow or nonexistent. In an effort to fix this NYnet has teamed up with
Moorsweb and
LN Communications to expand its high-speed broadband network into the area.
NYnet's plan involves using its existing
fibre optic broadband platform to connect up
Gillamoor School, which is on the edge of the
North Yorkshire Moors. From here the service will be
distributed over nine miles in three directions via a wireless link.
David Cullen, CEO of NYnet, said:
"We are delighted NYnet is able to make such a difference to people's lives. North Yorkshire is England's largest county and has some of the most remote villages in the country. Following a pilot in Newton on Rawcliffe, Moorsweb is the second project in a series of community broadband initiatives that NYnet plan to introduce in rural villages throughout North Yorkshire in 2011."
Residents and businesses can expected to receive internet download and upload speeds of
up to 6Mbps, which could rise to 10Mbps in the future with further improvements. NYnet hopes that its new scheme will reverse the trend of urban migration and stimulate local economic and social regeneration.
Moorsweb is also planning to add
Rosedale to the fibre connection and is investigating the possibility of further extending the benefits to
Hutton-le-Hole and other communities.
