The
Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has attacked the
sorry state of broadband coverage and performance in Wales, especially in rural areas, and called upon the
Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) not to let Wales slip behind the rest of the UK.
A Spokesman for the Federation of Small Businesses in Wales, Simon Evans, said (Wales Online):"Many areas in Wales, especially rural areas, are being let down by poor infrastructure and slow broadband speeds. Broadband is not an added luxury but an essential utility such as water and electricity.
We welcome the commitments to broadband coverage for Wales by the previous Welsh Government, and would welcome further information on timescale, as other parts of the UK have set ambitious plans for implementation and Wales does not want to be left behind.
We would also seek clarity with regard to where responsibility for implementing this will sit, either within the Welsh Government, or within the new ICT Sector Panel."
The Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) has been quick to defend itself and notes their "
strong track record of investing to increase the availability and take-up of broadband in Wales". The assembly also points to the new
Digital Wales Strategy, which seeks to bring "
super-fast" broadband to all businesses by the middle of 2016, with access for households by 2020.
Unfortunately WAG's remarks are unlikely to appease its critics, which continue to feel that the assembly is allowing other parts of the UK to race ahead.
