Wispa Limited Launches New Lobby Group for Better Broadband in Wales UK

Posted: 15th Aug, 2011 By: MarkJ

Richard Brown, COO at Wispa Limited, said:

"Wispa Limited have been highlighting the shortcomings of the Welsh Government's broadband policy for some time. Add to this our absolute concern that Ofcom is not actually generating real competition in the marketplace for rural users, and we had to make a choice. Keep complaining and hoping something will happen [or] do something about it.

We chose to do something about it, and have launched the exw.me initiative. We wont stop pointing out the shortcomings - and we wont stop campaigning to make things better - we will simply use exw.me to bring everyone together to have a much more powerful voice."

According to Wispa Ltd., exw is an abbreviation for 'ex-works', with 'ex' being used to denote something that you are not entitled to. "Both of these seem to apply to broadband in Wales. Ex-works is when you have to go and pick up your purchase yourself – and many of us in Wales feel like we have to do that with our broadband!," added Brown.

Exw believes that the government's commitment to deliver a minimum broadband download speed of at least 2Mbps to everybody by 2015 (this will apply to about 10% of the UK, with 90% being promised speeds of 25Mbps+) is "simply not good enough", although the site doesn't appear to propose any clear alternatives of its own. It states instead that some 3m Welsh Residents still cannot get "decent" broadband.

The new group, which is not to be confused with the Wales Internet Service Providers Association (WISPA), which questionably opted to use the same name as Wispa Ltd and without first checking whether or not it was free, has also set up a new donation system to help build funds for their lobbying plans.
