Mobile operator Vodafone UK has made the unsurprising announcement that their new 4G (LTE at 800MHz and 2.6GHz) based Mobile Broadband network will be expanded to reach more than 94% of the Welsh population, with Caerphilly, Cardiff, Connah’s Quay, Llanelli, Newport and Penarth being some of the latest to go live.
We say unsurprising because the operator has already openly committed, as part of their current £1bn network investment, to deploy 4G to 98% of the UK population by the end of 2015 and they’ve also signed up to the Government’s related geographic coverage boost (here); just the same as EE, O2 and Three UK.
Jorge Fernandes, CTO of Vodafone UK, said:
“Our network improvements across Wales will ensure more people and businesses have the opportunity to thrive in today’s digital world, whilst the launch of 4G will give them the opportunity to access and share data faster than ever before. However, this is only the start as we continue to invest in our network and services across the country.”
Otherwise today’s announcement follows last month’s news that Bridgend in South Wales had become the 400th community to benefit from the arrival of Vodafone’s so-called “ultrafast” 4G service. At present their 4G population coverage is sitting at around 60%.
