Mobile operator and ISP Vodafone UK has today announced the launch of both a new ‘Power Hub‘ router for their home broadband packages and a complementary new ‘Super Wi-Fi 6 Booster‘ device to help improve home wireless connectivity. New customers, joining from today, on any standard plan will receive the Power Hub router.

Ofcom’s spring 2024 study of UK fixed broadband and mobile coverage has reported that “full fibre” (FTTP) now reaches 62% of the UK (up from 57% in Sept 2023), while 80% are within reach of a gigabit-capable network (up from 78%) and 85-92% of premises can get an outdoor 5G signal from at least one operator (largely unchanged).

The Scottish Government (SG) has announced that both of its past and present broadband roll-out programmes, accounting for a total public investment of £1bn, have now helped more than 1 million extra premises (homes and businesses) in poorly served areas to gain access to a faster broadband ISP network.

Broadband ISP Plusnet has this week introduced a bunch of new discounts across their home broadband packages, which for example have slashed the monthly price of their top 900Mbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) package to just £41.99 per month on a 24-month term.

Rochdale-based UK ISP Zen Internet has informed ISPreview that they’ve passed an important milestone after their broadband subscriber (circuit) base surpassed the 200,810 mark, which represents an increase of 14,810 on the total of 186,000 that was published in their last annual accounts to the end of September 2022.

The national UK telecoms, media and internet regulator, Ofcom, has today begun the early evidence gathering and development phase for their next major review of the UK’s wholesale telecoms market – Telecoms Access Review 2026 (TAR), which will look to make changes that “promote competition and investment” in gigabit broadband and business connectivity.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today concluded its investigation into Openreach’s Quality of Service (i.e. minimum standards for repairs and new line provision) targets, which found that they “failed to meet, by narrow margins,” 3 out of 35 of the QoS standards in the leased lines (Ethernet) and local wholesale broadband markets.

Reputable internet provider iDNET, which has been around since 1996 and offers a variety of fibre broadband and Ethernet services to UK homes and businesses, has moved to boost their wider network resilience against “rogue JCB digging” by partnering with Zayo to install their own Dark Fibre Ring for 360Gbps of extra capacity.

Openreach (BT) has finally succeeded in deploying ReTransmission (ReTx / G.INP) across their ECI (Ribbon) based UK estate of Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) broadband ISP cabinets and customer lines, which comes after many years of trying to get the technology to work. The result is faster speeds and improved stability.

Mobile operator and ISP Vodafone UK has just released their Q3 FY24 financial results, which saw their fixed line broadband base grow to total 1.331 million customers (up by 39k in Q3 vs 27k in the Q2), while their mobile customers grew to 18.572 million (up by 330k in Q3 vs 218k in Q2).

Mobile network operator and ISP Vodafone UK has now, after previously announcing that they were retiring both their old c.35-38Mbps Fibre 1 (FTTC / VDSL2) and related Full Fibre 1 (FTTP) home broadband packages for new customers (not existing subscribers), said this was done in error. But the related Social Tariff is still missing.

The latest research from Point Topic has revealed that world fixed broadband lines grew by 1.6% (22.39 million) in Q3 2023 to total 1.42 billion connections, which compares with 1.87% (24.59m) in the same quarter last year. But the subscriber growth rate of “full fibre” (FTTP/B) networks in the UK almost stalled in the latest quarter.

Openreach (BT) has published the next round of 46 exchanges under Tranche 15 of their “FTTP Priority Exchange Stop Sell” programme, which reflects locations where over 75% of premises are able to get full fibre and can thus stop selling copper based phone and broadband products (i.e. FTTP is left as the only available product).

Openreach (BT) are expecting to reach a record peak quarterly build rate on their new gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network of 1 million premises passed in Q4 FY24 (i.e. end of March 2024), which is up from the 860K seen in Q2 (Sept 2023). Commercial build costs are also said to still be below £300 per premises.

UK ISP BT and its digital incubation team, Etc. (that is their actual name), has this morning kicked off the first pilot of an Electric Vehicle (EV) charger that has been repurposed from one of Openreach’s old street cabinets, which was “traditionally used to store broadband and phone cabling“. Up to 60,000 more could follow.

New customers of BT’s home broadband packages may like to know that the ISP has kicked off their January Sale today, which includes a number of headline discounts. For example, their 150Mbps and 900Mbps packages have now been reduced to £28.99 and £52.99 per month respectively on a 24-month term with free setup (rising to £33.99 and £57.99 post-contract).
