Budget UK internet and phone provider TalkTalk can celebrate today after the ISP returned to growth, following a three year period of decline, by adding +10,000 new broadband subscribers during Q4-2012 (total 4,053,000). The number of customers taking their superfast “fibre” broadband (FTTC) package also increased to 52,000 during Q4 (+22k).

Broadband and phone provider KC, which operates almost exclusively in the Hull area of East Yorkshire (England), has adjusted the eligibility criteria for its Social Access Package that offers cheaper phone line rental (£5.62 a month) to the unemployed (low income groups) and those with other special needs.

BT has unsurprisingly been chosen by the joint Cambridgeshire and Peterborough project in England (UK) to help make superfast broadband (24Mbps+) services available to 90% of local premises by 2015 (note: “very nearly” 100% will also get speeds of at least 2Mbps by the same date).

Today is officially the 10th annual Safer Internet Day, which works to help educate web surfers and children from around the world about the dangers of internet use and how to stay safe online. This year’s theme is “online rights and responsibilities” and encouraging web users to “connect with respect“.

The results from 846 respondents to ISPreview.co.uk’s latest monthly reader poll have found that 89% still feel that big broadband ISPs are continuing to mislead consumers with their advertising practices, especially in regards to promotions of internet service speed and pricing. Time for tougher rules perhaps.

Mobile operator Three UK (Hutchison 3GUK Ltd.) has announced that their forthcoming 4G (LTE) based “ultrafast” Mobile Broadband network will, unlike its rivals, offer the service across all existing and new price plans “without customers needing to pay a premium fee to upgrade“.

The latest summary of anecdotal consumer broadband ISP speed testing data has revealed that the average download speed in the United Kingdom fell sharply from 19.374Mbps (Megabits per second) in December 2012 to 16.914Mbps during January 2013. Meanwhile the average upload speed is largely unchanged at 2.387Mbps.

Customers of ISP O2 UK (BE Broadband) have this week begun to receive the first 250 of just under 1,000 initial internet piracy threat letters from Golden Eye International (GEIL), which targets internet users whom are suspected of having “illegally” shared (P2P) copyright content that belongs to the Ben Dover porn brand.

One of the most controversial parts of the UK Digital Economy Act 2010 (DEAct), a “technical measure” that could eventually see prolific internet pirates being disconnected (“account suspension”) from their broadband ISP, might be dropped in favour of a set financial penalty (e.g. £100+ fine).

A new Home Broadband Survey 2013, which combined the results from 50,000 speed tests with consumer research from OnePoll, has named PlusNet the best broadband provider in the United Kingdom after it secured the highest scores across most categories (e.g. speed satisfaction, support and reliability).

Internet provider BT Retail has today introduced “Totally Unlimited Broadband” on all but its entry level offerings, some of which were already supposed to be “unlimited” in the first place. The key difference appears to be a policy change and related products are now “free from traffic management” (e.g. P2P and video streaming restrictions).

As expected the UK communications regulator, Ofcom, has today proposed to allow 4G (LTE) superfast Mobile Broadband services to also be delivered over the 900MHz, 1800MHz (EE are at present the only one allowed to do this) and 2100MHz radio spectrum bands that are currently used for a mix of existing 2G and 3G services.

National UK telecoms operator BT has today released its latest Q4-2012 financial results, which revealed that their retail broadband ISP subscriber base grew by +122k (up from +88k in Q3-2012) to total 6,569,000 customers (more than 1m of which are fibre optic based BTInfinity superfast broadband subscribers).

The “root of all evil” struck in the car park of Bracknell based business ISP Andrews and Arnold (AAISP) earlier this week after high winds on Wednesday felled a large tree, which narrowly missed a car belonging to the wife of boss Adrian Kennard.

BTOpenreach has today started a four-week long technical trial for its new 220Mbps (Megabits per second) capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP product, which will be available from telephone exchanges in Bradwell Abbey, Chester South, Exeter and York (England).
