The latest monthly Broadband.co.uk survey of anecdotal consumer broadband ISP speed testing data for April 2013 has reported that the average download speed in the United Kingdom increased slightly from 18.831Mbps in March to 19.014Mbps now. The average upload speed also hit 3.068Mbps (up from 2.945Mbps).

ISP EE UK Offers 3 Months FREE Superfast Fibre Broadband Trial

New customers who take one of EE’s superfast fixed line Fibre Broadband (FTTC) packages, which offer internet download speeds of up to 76Mbps, can now trial the service free for the first three months of service (includes a free connection and free router). Otherwise prices for the service start from £15 inc. VAT a month.

Brighton UK Homes Join Trial to Help Test for 4G and TV Interference

Some 80,000 premises in Brighton (England) have joined at800.tv‘s (DMSL) trial to test whether or not the new generation of 4G (LTE) based Mobile Broadband services in the 800MHz band will disrupt Digital Terrestrial TV (Freeview) services. But the new trial will be a little bit different.

ISP Sky Broadband UK Grows to 4.39 Million Subscribers

Sky Broadband (BSkyB) has today published their latest financial results to 31st March 2013 (Q1-2013), which reported another quarterly increase of +152,000 in their fixed line broadband ISP subscriber base to total 4,387,000 customers (up sharply from the +132k added in Q4-2012 and +102k in Q3-2012).

Ofcom UK Probes BT After TalkTalk FTTC Broadband Competition Complaint

BT has said that its “disappointed” after the UK communications regulator, Ofcom, responded to a competition complaint from rival ISP TalkTalk by opening an investigation into whether or not the operator was “abusing a dominant position” in its supply of superfast broadband (FTTC and FTTP) services.

Customers of O2 / BE Broadband’s fixed line home broadband and phone service have this week been told that the £180m+ sale to Sky Broadband (BSkyB) “has now gone through” and related subscribers are thus “officially with Sky“. But the actual migration to Sky will not get underway until this Autumn 2013.

A new business impact study conducted by Regeneris and BT during January 2013 has predicted that the deployment of fibre optic based (FTTC and FTTP) broadband ISP services in Northern Ireland could generate over £750m in additional revenue by 2018 and save circa(c) £45 million in operating costs.

Lottery Funding Helps Remote Shetland Islands Village Get Fast Broadband

The tiny community of West Burrafirth on the remote Shetland Islands (North of Scotland) will soon see their broadband ISP speeds lifted from just 0.16Mbps (Megabits per second) to around 25Mbps thanks to a new wireless and fibre optic link, support from a local ISP and national lottery funding.

BT Openreach Tweaks UK ISP Line Rental and Abortive Visit Charges

BTOpenreach, which maintains BT’s national telecoms network, has tweaked the prices that ISPs and other communications providers must pay for line rental (LLU and WLR), missed appointments, aborted engineer visits and unbundled line migrations. Some charges are more expensive while others are a little cheaper.

The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned PlusNet’s recent Yorkshire-themed TV advert for its half price broadband offer (“All broadband’s half off“) after several viewers complained that the discount was, contrary to the promotional wording, not available to everybody.

UK ISPs Confused But Supportive of 330Mbps Fibre on Demand Broadband
