BT WiFi has announced that it’s now home to a network of 5 Million public Wi-Fi hotspots in the United Kingdom and Ireland. But most of those come from customers of BT’s Total Broadband packages and its FON supporting routers that automatically turn home connections into public wifi access points.

The London Borough of Camden in England has today become the first of seventeen councils in the capital city to confirm a free public Wi-Fi (wireless internet) service to streets and open spaces across the borough, though it’s only free for the first 30 minutes of use (daily).

The British Labour Party appears to have begun its early campaigning for the next general election in 2015 by proposing that £75 million from the floundering £150 million “super-connected cities” (Urban Broadband Fund) programme be diverted to help connect those in most need (i.e. the last 10% of neglected rural areas).

Telecoms giant BT has today posted their latest financial results to 31st March 2013 (Q1-2013), which revealed that the operators retail ISP division had increased its fixed line broadband subscribers by +136,000 in the quarter to total 6,704,000 (up from the +122k added in Q4-2012 and +88k in Q3-2012).

BT Retail has today confirmed that customers of its various home broadband packages will now be able to get its new BTSport TV service for free, which includes live weekly matches from the Barclays Premier League (Football). On top of that the price of its superfast broadband (BTInfinity) service has been cut to just £15 a month.

Rochdale-based ISP Zen Internet has today hinted that the on-going investment of £3.5 million into their core infrastructure, which will build a new network of local telephone exchange PoPs (Points of Presence), will also result in “lower priced Fibre Optic Broadband services” and unlimited usage options.

The Project Director for the government’s £150m Urban Broadband Fund (UBF), which aims to help expand the coverage of “ultra-fast” broadband (80-100Mbps+) and “high speed” public wifi services into neglected areas, has blamed Brussels for once again delaying funding approvals and forcing selected cities to “urgently find a Plan B“.

ISP PlusNet has begun offering a series of new half price promotions on their standard (up to 16Mbps) and superfast (up to 80Mbps) unlimited broadband and phone bundle packages, although the ISP has also quietly hiked some of their line rental and call plan prices.
