BT are offering one hour’s worth of free access to their national network of public wireless Internet (wifi) hotspots, which is part of a special pre-Christmas promotion.

The latest annual E-Commerce and ICT Activity study from the Office for National Statistics has revealed that the vast majority (96%) of businesses in the United Kingdom have Internet access (95% use broadband) and (85.5%) of those continue to use DSL broadband technology. But superfast connectivity is growing.

A group of radio amateurs have warned that the next generation G.fast (ITU G.9700 / aka – FTTC2) broadband technology, which BT and Huawei plan to “field trial” in the UK alongside Fibre-to-the-Distribution-Point (FTTdp) lines for potential speeds of up to around 1000Mbps (here), could cause significant interference for them.

The Government’s Home Office has today published a new report from the Prime Minister’s Task Force on Tackling Radicalisation and Extremism, which proposes to force broadband ISPs into helping identify and block websites that contain “extremist content“.

The Government’s Treasury has today announced a new £10 Million “competitive fund” that aims to “test innovative solutions to deliver superfast broadband services to the most difficult to reach areas“, which sounds a lot like another attempt to do what DEFRA’s £20m Rural Community Broadband Fund (RCBF) has often struggled to achieve.

It started with a whimper. Mobile operator Three UK has quietly revealed, through a small mention in an unrelated press release, that its new superfast 4G (LTE at 800MHz and 1800MHz) based Mobile Broadband network has now finally started to go live for existing customers “at no extra cost“.

Mobile operator EE (4GEE) has announced that 10 more towns around the United Kingdom have now been enabled for its 4G (LTE at 1800MHz) based superfast Mobile Broadband network and a further 19 will go live before Christmas day.

The tit for tat advertising war appears to be continuing after a complaint by Sky Broadband (BSkyB) successfully resulted in the banning of another national press advert for BT’s Broadband services, which boldly said “Official. BT Broadband offers better overall performance than Sky and TalkTalk“.

The £40 million Better Broadband to Suffolk project, which is working to make BT’s superfast “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network available to more than 85% of local homes and businesses by the end of 2015, has joined other regions in seeking fresh Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) funding to reach more premises.

The latest monthly performance study of the United Kingdom’s largest seven home broadband ISPs has found that the average download speed in November 2013 was 17.304Mbps (up from 16.842Mbps last month) and the average upload speed climbed to 3.370Mbps (up from 2.896Mbps).

The High Court of Justice in London has ruled that BT infringes upon one of ASSIA’s patents for DSL management technologies, which the telecoms operator allegedly uses as part of their national FTTC (VDSL) based Next Generation Access (NGA) network deployment.

Sky Broadband (BSkyB) has today unveiled a new version (SR102) of their original Sky Hub (SR101) wireless router, which improves upon the old model by being coloured in “stylish black” and integrating a VDSL modem so that customers who adopt their FTTC superfast broadband (Sky Fibre) package no longer need to use a separate modem from BTOpenreach.

The latest Analysys Mason study has claimed that the United Kingdom remains top of the “big five” (EU5) European countries (i.e. France, Germany, Italy and Spain) in terms of superfast broadband (30Mbps+) coverage, take-up, average service speeds and competition. But the wider picture remains more complex.

Internet and phone provider PlusNet, which is a semi-independent sibling of BT, has appointed Andy Baker (Aged 41) to be its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Andy replaces the ISPs current CEO, Jamie Ford, whom is leaving to pursue a role as the Managing Director of IT Services at BT Business.

The Snaresbrook Crown Court has sentenced a corrupt former BT employee and members of a criminal gang to a total of over 32 years in jail after they were found to have colluded over the theft and damage of vital copper broadband and phone cable, which cost the telecoms operator a total of £279,635.00.
