UPDATE City of London Corp “fed up” with BT – Will Fix Slow Broadband Itself

The City of London Corporation, which in July criticised BT for an “unacceptable” failure to make superfast broadband available to SME businesses within the heart of London’s Square Mile (here), has said they’re still “fed up” with being ignored by the operator and have thus committed to resolve the local connectivity problems themselves.

The Government has responded to a recent Freedom of Information (FoI) request by revealing a breakdown of both successful and unsuccessful bids to their much criticised £20m Rural Community Broadband Fund (RCBF), which originally set out to help rural areas (i.e. in the last 10% of England) gain access to superfast broadband (24Mbps+).

UPDATE Ofcom – UK Mobile Broadband Speeds Reach 15.1Mbps on 4G

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today released its first new study into the national performance of Mobile Broadband services since May 2011. The results show that the average mobile download speed has risen to 15.1Mbps on 4G and 6.1Mbps on 3G (up from a general 1.5 – 2.1Mbps in 2011). The fastest operators were EE and O2.

Cable operator Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has reportedly sold 100,000 of its old copper-line based Virgin National (Virgin.net / ADSL2+) broadband subscribers to rival ISP TalkTalk.

CityFibre Signs Fibre Optic Capacity Deal with EE and Three UK

CityFibre has today signed a major long-term fibre optic infrastructure deal with two national UK mobile network operators, EE and Three UK, which will involve the deployment of Dark Fibre backhaul connections to help cost efficiencies and boost capacity to mobile masts across the respective networks.

UPDATE Superfast Broadband Delivery UK Rollout Reaches 1.5m Premises

The Government’s national Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) programme, which aims to make fixed line superfast broadband (24Mbps+) connections available to 95% of people in the United Kingdom by 2017, has now helped more than 1.5 million homes and businesses to gain access to the service (up by +500K since August 2014). Superfast connections can now allegedly be taken by 80% of the UK.

Company Director Fined for Abuse of Orange UK’s Private Customer Details

The Government’s Information Commissioners Office (ICO) has fined Matthew Devlin (age 25), a director of three marketing and telecoms companies, the measly sum of £500 after he was found to have “illegally” accessed one of Orange UK’s (EE) customer databases in order to target users with rival upgrade promotions.

UPDATE BT’s 330Mbps FTTP Broadband Reaches 160,000 UK Premises

BTOpenreach, which maintains and upgrades BT’s national telecoms network across the United Kingdom, has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that its 330Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based fibre optic broadband technology is now available to 250,000 160,000 homes and businesses (premises passed footprint). Meanwhile FTTC might eventually be boosted to 100Mbps+.

Virgin Media Extend Cable Broadband Network to 5000 Glasgow Homes

Virgin Media has just announced the third expansion of its 152Mbps (Megabits per second) capable cable broadband (DOCSIS), TV and phone network since the summer, which will this time add an additional 5,000 homes in Glasgow (Scotland) to their coverage.

UK ISP PlusNet Offer GBP1.50 Unlimited Broadband Service for One Year

Internet provider PlusNet has tweaked their existing unlimited home broadband (up to 17Mbps) and phone package, which can now be taken for either £2.50 per month for the first 12 months of service (12 month contract) or £1.50 per month if you take out a slightly longer 18 month contract (plus line rental from £12.99). On top of that there’s also £70 cashback.

2014 NextGen Digital Challenge Awards Name UK Best Broadband Networks

The NextGen Conference in Derby has today revealed the winners of their annual 2014 Digital Challenge Awards, which are designed to showcase projects from across the United Kingdom that deliver the “best in next generation digital access infrastructure innovation“. This year saw JT (Jersey Telecom) and the ITS Technology Group both scoop gongs for their broadband deployments.

Rural B4RN FTTH Network Shortlisted for Enterprise Project of the Year

The largely community funded and built B4RN (Broadband for the Rural North) project, which is currently rolling out a 1000Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH/P) broadband network in rural Lancashire, has been shortlisted by the forthcoming 2014 Techworld Awards event under the “Enterprise Project of the Year” category.

UPD ASA Ban TalkTalk ISP Advert for “Unbeatable” and “Fastest Wi-Fi” Claim

A circular advert for TalkTalk’s broadband package has been banned by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) for being “misleading” after it claimed that the ISPs new Super Router device was able to offer subscribers “unbeatable signal strength” and the “UK’s fastest Wi-Fi technology.” Oops.

UPDATE ASA UK Allow BT to Describe FTTC as “Fibre Optic” Broadband

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has once again ruled that it’s perfectly fine for ISPs to describe hybrid-fibre broadband connections, such as those based off BT’s ‘up to’ 80Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) technology, to describe such services as “fibre optic” even though they can also involve a significant amount of slower copper cable.

SKY TV Users Offered 3 Months FREE Sky Broadband and Phone Test Drive

Ship Recovers Submersible Plough to Continue BT Scotland Fibre Optic Rollout

The cable laying ship Rene Descartes (Orange Marine), which almost two months ago lost a 8 tonne submersible plough (“Elodie“) worth £3.6m that was being used to deploy 20 new BT submarine fibre optic cables around the western side of Scotland’s Highlands and Islands region, has now fully recovered its hardware.
