Cable operator Virgin Media Business has today signed a new “first of its kind” deal worth £1.2 million with Derby City Council that will help up to 150 small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the city to receive an ultrafast broadband connection capable of 2000Mbps (2Gbps) and at a “fraction of the usual cost“.

The Government’s new Consumer Protection (Amendment) Regulations 2014 were officially introduced yesterday and have given consumers more power to take a direct right of action against traders (i.e. a retailer or service provider) who mislead or bully them into buying a service that either isn’t what you wanted or doesn’t work as intended.

In a somewhat expected move the Chief Executive of national UK telecoms and media regulator Ofcom, Ed Richards, has announced that he is to stand down from his post at the end of December 2014. At present nobody has been lined up to replace him.

The outgoing Vice-President of the European Commission’s (EC) Digital Agenda project, Neelie Kroes, had stern words for members of the European Telecommunications Network Operators Association (ETNO) yesterday when she warned against protectionist positions and stated that “sometimes I think the telecoms sector is its own worst enemy“.

The outspoken boss of broadband provider AAISP (Andrews and Arnold), Adrian Kennard, has criticised BTOpenreach for making a “very very detrimental change” to the terms of their Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) service. In particular Openreach intends to stop supporting the VDSL modem they provide, which the ISP fears could make it harder and more costly to get faults fixed.

The Hampshire Superfast Broadband project in England has today revealed the next communities (Phase Four) to benefit from the local state-aid supported deployment of BT’s FTTC/P based superfast broadband (24Mbps+) network, which aims to reach 90% of homes and businesses by the end of 2015 and at least 95% by the end of 2017.

The newly rebranded Fuel Broadband (formerly Primus Saver) has, in a curious twist, defended their earlier decision to stop selling superfast “fibre broadband” (FTTC) packages by stating that a “high quality ADSL line is more than sufficient“.

Cable operator Virgin Media has moved from its previously somewhat neutral stance, specifically in the conflict between BSkyB (Sky Broadband) and BT over Premier League TV rights, by lodging an official complaint with Ofcom and pleading for the comms regulator to help stop the costs of related content from getting out of control.

KC’s on-going efforts to deploy a superfast fibre optic (FTTP/C) broadband network in Hull (East Yorkshire, England), which is called ‘Lightstream’, has passed another milestone after a brief trading statement from parent company KCOM confirmed that 10,000 people had now subscribed to the service.

The average Internet download speed for the biggest eight national fixed line home broadband ISPs in the United Kingdom held fairly steady at 22.45Mbps during September 2014 (up from 22.06Mbps in June 2014), while uploads increased by just +2.48% in the quarter to 5.37Mbps. As usual Virgin Media and BT top the tables.

Mobile network operator EE has started October 2014 by announcing that another batch of 18 towns across Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and England can now receive their “superfast” 4G (4GEE – LTE at 1800MHz) based Mobile Broadband service, including Prince Harry’s old training grounds at the Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst.

The British Educational Suppliers Association (BESA) has told the Government to do more to improve Internet connectivity in Schools across the United Kingdom, after their annual survey of ICT capabilities found that poor WiFi provision was a “major problem” in 65% of primary and 54% of secondary schools. Meanwhile 42% of primary and 31% of secondary schools also considered themselves to be “under-resourced” in broadband provision.

The £15.47m state aid supported CSW Broadband scheme has today announced the next batch of areas that will be upgraded with access to BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network in Coventry, Solihull and Warwickshire (England).

A new study of 1,770 Internet users in the United Kingdom, which was conducted by Tata Communications, has revealed that a desire for “light speed connectivity” came top of the list when respondents were asked for their thoughts on the most inspirational opportunity that the Internet will facilitate in the next 3-5 years.

The latest State of the Internet Q2-2014 report from Akamai has claimed that average world broadband Internet download speeds increased by an impressive 21% in Q2 to hit 4.6Mbps. By comparison the UK saw its performance jump by 12% to reach 11.1Mbps, making us the 16th fastest country (down from 15th in Q1); although our peak speeds rank a place higher.

Customers of mobile giant EE (Everything Everywhere) will be pleased to know that the network operator has finally fixed the incorrect reporting of Mobile Broadband data usage, which resulted in some users being asked to upgrade or buy more data when they actually didn’t need to do so.
