UPD BT Demand Ofcom to Stop Subsidising TalkTalk and Sky’s UK Broadband

The endless spat over competition in the United Kingdom’s wholesale broadband ISP market took another turn today after BT used a new report from Plum Consulting to support their calls for Ofcom to “level the playing field” by ending its “pricing distortion” policy, which they claim allows rival ISPs to offer cheaper services.

Ofcom has launched an own-initiative investigation into EE (also trading as Orange UK and T-Mobile), which will look at whether or not the mobile and Internet provider has “failed to comply” with the regulators code for consumer complaints handling (General Condition 14.4).

Virgin Media UK Scraps Traffic Management for Broadband Downloads

One other huge change at Virgin Media today, which deserves its own news item, is that the cable provider has also scrapped the Traffic Management Policy (TMP) for downloads across all of their fixed line cable broadband packages. Sadly upload traffic isn’t so lucky.

Virgin Media UK Launch FREE Web Safe Network Level Filtering Service

Virgin Media has today become the last of the big broadband ISPs to launch free Parental Controls (Web Safe), which support the Government demanded network-level filtering technology to help censor “potentially age-inappropriate websites“. Virgin’s site is also being updated to reflect their new headline speeds of up to 152Mbps.

Satellite Internet, an aptly named broadband provider that makes use of the SES (ASTRA) platform, has called on local councils across the United Kingdom to spend some of the latest £250m in broadband funding on connecting the last 5% of rural areas to the Internet via Satellite instead of land lines.

24% of EU Internet Users Suffer ISP Internet Content Restrictions or Blocking

A new survey of 28,000 Internet using citizens across the European Union (3290 from the UK) has revealed that 24% claim to have been prevented by their broadband ISP or mobile operator from watching videos, listening to music or using other applications of their choice, allegedly due to censorship measures or speed restrictions.

BT Move to Create Over 1000 New UK Apprenticeship and Graduate Jobs

Telecoms giant BT has announced that it will create more than 1,000 new apprenticeship and graduate jobs. On top of that the operator is supporting the employer-led “Movement to Work” initiative, which aims to tackle youth unemployment by providing up to 1,500 vocational training and work experience placements over the next 18 months.

Europe Approve Weakened Broadband Infrastructure Investment for 100Mb+

The European Parliament has today approved a €1bn (£820m) Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) investment package, which aims to support pan-European digital projects. But only 15% has been earmarked to support broadband projects of which at least one third will aim at speeds of 100Mbps+.

Budget broadband and calls provider TalkTalk reports that its recent move to become “the first and only ISP” to make all of their fixed phone line privacy calling features (e.g. Last Caller Barring and Anonymous Caller Reject) completely free has boosted the number of customers using the service almost four-fold.

BT Wholesale’s incident helpdesk manager has told the boss of broadband provider AAISP, Adrian Kennard, that they’re “fully committed to ensuring that all capacity issues are addressed” after concerns over alleged network congestion on several of BT’s 21st Century Network (21CN) telephone exchanges were raised.
