Last year Sky Broadband became the first of the major ISPs in the United Kingdom to begin a wide-scale roll-out of the Internet Protocol v6 (IPv6) addressing standard and today they’ve confirmed that their work is “almost completed“, with over 90% of their broadband customers being IPv6 enabled.

Fibre optic ISP Gigaclear has beaten both BT and Virgin Media by reaching a deal to bring 1Gbps “ultra-fast” broadband services to the rural village of Crazies Hill in Berkshire (England), which will also benefit the surrounding communities of Cockpole Green, Warren Row and Knowl Hill.

The Chairman and CEO of Telefonica SA, Jose Maria Alvarez-Pallete, seems to have all but confirmed that their UK mobile operator sibling, O2, could be floated on the market via an Initial Public Offering (IPO) by the end of 2016, which follows the collapse of their proposed £10.25bn merger with Three UK.

Cable operator Virgin Media has today reached a new agreement with UK property developer Redrow, which will initially result in more than 13,000 homes across Tamworth, Shrewsbury and Evesham gaining access to their 300Mbps capable broadband (HFC DOCSIS / FTTP) and TV network.

The European Commission’s Directorate-General for Competition has opened an investigation into the Aylesbury Vale Broadband project over its use of State Aid to roll-out an ultra-fast FTTH broadband network in rural Buckinghamshire, which is despite the presence of a competing wireless network.

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has upheld a £1,000 fine against UK phone and broadband provider TalkTalk after the ISP failed to inform the watchdog that a personal data breach had occurred on its system (the provider should have done this within 24 hours of becoming aware).

A number of ISPs (e.g. Sky Broadband and Gigaclear) in big parts of South West England are currently being affected after a major (trunk) fibre optic cable was damaged in an unspecified incident, which has cut Internet and phone services around parts of Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire.

BT appears to be suing online PC video game and digital distribution giant Valve Corporation because its popular STEAM platform is alleged to “incorporate technologies invented by BT” (e.g. cloud features like Valve’s Steam Library, Steam Chat, Steam Messaging and Steam Broadcasting).

Several rural Scottish Highlands communities around the Ullapool, Lochbroom, Little Lochbroom and Coigach areas have clubbed together in order to form the Highland Community Broadband (HCB), which aims to fund and build its own “superfast” (50Mbps capable) wireless broadband network in the area.
