The European Union’s plan to end mobile roaming charges from 15th June 2017 (i.e. any call, text or data allowances will come from your domestic plan), which will also apply to the UK until we leave in a few years’ time, has been thrown into confusion after a key part of the policy was withdrawn.

BTOpenreach has confirmed that businesses covered by their trial of “ultrafast” (up to 1000Mbps) Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) based broadband technology in the city of Bristol (South West England) will, for a limited time, be able to get the service with both a free connection and free rental.

Internet provider BT has introduced a discount that cuts the cost of their standard (up to 17Mbps) unlimited broadband package to just £4.50 per month for 12 months, while their superfast (up to 52Mbps) Unlimited Infinity 1 service is now reduced to £9.50 and 76Mbps Infinity 2 to £25.

The non-profit Scottish Rural Action group has published a new report that points to “serious failings” in Scotland’s existing roll-out of “superfast broadband” services with BT and calls for 5 major policy changes, which they say would establish an “ultrafast” (300Mbps+) model for rural areas.
