UK ISP Sky Broadband is close to resolving a major outage that began yesterday afternoon (around 5pm – 10th July 2017) after an underground fire caused significant damage to some of their core fibre optic cable infrastructure in the East Midlands of England.
Apparently the repair work was initially slowed due to the usual health and safety concerns (police or fire crews may not allow instant access until the site has been assessed), although engineers were eventually able to access the area and services were restored to the majority of Sky’s customer base by 7am today.
However some problems remain and Sky anticipates that a full restoration is due before midday.

UPDATE 2pm
The latest update from Sky states: “All services are now back online however you may see intermittent disruptions while repair work continues. We’re sorry for any inconvenience caused.”
UPDATE 6:41pm
The outage appears to have affected some other ISPs and we now understand that it was due to an electrical explosion, unrelated to Sky, which caused an underground fire and as a result damaged cabling on the fibre network.
