The Government has today launched a new review that will examine what changes need to be made (e.g. planning, copper switch-off) in order to make the United Kingdom attractive for investment to support the rollout of new “full fibre” broadband (FTTP/H) and future 5G Mobile networks.

The UK Government’s £5 million Better Broadband Subsidy Scheme, which offers grants worth £400 (maximum) to rural households that are unable to get at least a 2Mbps broadband speed (this helps to get a faster connection installed), has been extended until the end of 2018.

Fibre optic ISP Gigaclear has announced that a commercial investment of £2.5 million is enabling some 2,000 premises in rural Devon (England) to access their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based ultrafast broadband network.

The £1.6bn+ state aid supported Broadband Delivery UK project has published its latest progress update to September 2017, which confirms that it has so far helped 4,651,700 extra premises across the United Kingdom to be covered by a fixed “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) network.

Transport for London has reported that their recent (summer) trial of a 4G Mobile network distribution technology, which ran in Tube tunnels on the Waterloo and City Line, was a success. Tfl are now tendering for a service provider that can deploy it across their entire Tube network from 2019.

Wireless infrastructure builder Arqiva has joined with Dali Wireless and Cellular Asset Management to improve Mobile coverage and capacity around Glasgow city centre (Scotland, UK) by harnessing a new digital Distributed Antenna System (DAS), which will also support future 5G rollouts.

The incumbent telecoms operator for Hull in East Yorkshire UK, KCOM, has today announced the final phase of their “Lightstream” roll-out, which will extend their “ultrafast” fibre optic broadband (FTTP/C) services to cover 100% of their network area (around 200,000 premises) by March 2019.

Somebody claiming to be the owner of troubled Kent-based UK broadband ISP True Telecom appears to have successfully had one of our articles pulled from Google, which is despite the fact that the somewhat verbose reasoning given in the complaint appears to set a very low bar.

The Scottish Government has announced that the city of Aberdeen is to receive £2m of public funding to extend Gigabit (1Gbps) ultrafast broadband connectivity to 57 “key public buildings” (e.g. schools, health and community centres), which forms part of a regional £254m investment package.

As Openreach begins to rollout their new 330Mbps capable hybrid fibre G.fast broadband service, which is set to reach 10 million UK premises by 2020, a new ISPreview.co.uk poll of 1,834 readers has found that 75.4% are interested in upgrading to the new service.
