Dark fibre builder Cityfibre has signed a new 19 year framework agreement with UK ISP Commsworld for £15.7m, which is their “largest public sector award to date” and will extend the existing Gigabit capable fibre optic (FTTP) network in Glasgow (Scotland) to 506 city council owned sites.

UK ISP TalkTalk has today decided to introduce a round of Christmas discounts on their standard (up to 17Mbps) and faster fibre / FTTC (up to 38Mbps) broadband packages, which will be available to order by new customers until early in 2018.

Ofcom’s planned auction of 4G and 5G friendly radio spectrum in the 2.3GHz and 3.4GHz bands might soon proceed after the High Court rejected an appeal by Three UK, which had demanded that the regulator impose a 30% spectrum cap in order to stop EE (BT) from bidding.

Broadband ISP TalkTalk is facing criticism after they once again blocked UK customers from being able to access the TeamViewer service from their network, which apparently stems from a fear that it is being used by scammers to target their subscribers.

Mobile operator Vodafone and Ericsson today claim to have become the “first” in the United Kingdom to conduct a live pre-standard test of future 5G Mobile technology, which was run both indoors and outdoors in central London using the 3.5GHz radio spectrum band.

After a final consultation (here) the Government has today revealed its chosen path for implementing a new legally-binding Universal Service Obligation (USO), which promises a minimum broadband download speed of 10Mbps (1Mbps upload) for all by 2020 and rejects BT’s £600m voluntary proposal.

As expected the Scottish Government has published the OJEU procurement document for their £600 million R100 programme, which aspires to extend superfast broadband (30Mbps+) networks to cover 100% of premises in Scotland (UK) by the end of 2021 (or March 2022 as a financial year).

Cable operator Virgin Media has announced that the on-going £3bn Project Lightning network expansion will see a 350Mbps capable ultrafast broadband and TV service being extended to cover a further 12,000 homes and businesses in Newcastle (Tyne and Wear, England).

Ofcom has today introduced a new change that means switching Mobile Network Operator (2G, 3G or 4G) in the United Kingdom will now become as easy as simply sending a free text message, although the new system won’t be fully introduced for another 18 months (1st July 2019).

The Government has today issued an update on the progress of their 5G strategy, which aims to help foster the UK roll-out of next generation ultrafast Mobile Broadband technology. Market regulator Ofcom has today published its International Communications Market Report 2017, which compares broadband and other telecoms services in the United Kingdom against 16 other countries. The UK fairs well for 30Mbps+ broadband coverage but our “full fibre” (FTTP/H) needs work.

Ofcom has published their final UK Code of Practice for the Government’s reformed Electronic Communications Code (ECC), which aims to make it easier and cheaper for mobile and broadband operators’ to deploy new infrastructure (masts, fibre optic cables etc.) on public or private land.

The Connected Nations 2017 report has today been published by Ofcom, which reveals a huge rise in the availability of fixed line 300Mbps+ “ultrafast broadband” services to 36% of the UK (up from 2% last year). Elsewhere 4% (1.1 million premises) still cannot receive speeds of 10Mbps+ (down from 6%).

After years of disagreement it has this morning been announced that BT and Sky have finally settled their long-running dispute over access to premium TV channels, which means that customers of both operators in the UK will soon gain access to a much wider array of content.
