The state aid supported Better Broadband for Oxfordshire project has agreed to yet another “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) roll-out extension with Openreach (BT), which means that a further 3,000 rural homes will be reached thanks to a new agreement worth £4 million.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has published its first annual report to the European Commission on their monitoring of the EU’s new rules for protecting Net Neutrality (open internet access). The report finds that “there are no major concerns regarding the openness of the internet in the UK.”

A new study conducted by consumer magazine Which?, which examined the security of connected devices in the home, has chastised Virgin Media for setting up their SuperHub v2 (VMDG485) cable broadband routers with a default password that is the same for many of their customers.

Openreach (BT) has confirmed that they’re testing a new Fibre-to-the-distribution-point (FTTdp) style of G.fast broadband technology that mounts hardware from NetComm Wireless on top of telegraph poles, which shows that the operator hasn’t given up on FTTdp.

Fixed wireless ISP Airband has won Lot 4 (Northern, Central and West Devon) of the Connecting Devon and Somerset project as part of a £7m contract, which is on top of their existing £4.6m deal (here) to deploy “superfast broadband” to 5,800 premises in the Dartmoor and Exmoor National Parks.

The national telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today updated their 2017 Wholesale Broadband Access (WBA) market review by proposing changes to improve competition around the UK, where BT (Openreach) continues to have Significant Market Power, and in Hull where KCOM is dominant.

UK Satellite operator Avanti has agreed a new contract worth £1,202,711 with the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), which will make a 40Mbps (download speed) broadband service available to rural businesses across Cornwall and Isles of Scilly in England.

Three of the UK’s most pioneering providers’ of ultrafast “full fibre” (FTTP/H) broadband – Gigaclear, Cityfibre and Hyperoptic – have today called on the Advertising Standards Authority to stop rivals from using the term “fibre” to advertise services delivered over slower copper wires.

Mobile operator Orange has announced that they intend to reduce their 4% stake in the embattled UK telecoms giant BT, possibly pushing it down to just 1.33%. The stake itself was created as part of BT’s £12.5bn merger with EE, which was previously owned by Orange and Deutsche Telecom.
